A Joyful and Reflective VE Day Celebration

At The Fleet, we marked VE Day with a celebration that was both deeply meaningful and full of fun, laughter, and community spirit. Residents, staff, and guests all joined together for a day that brought history to life and reminded us all of the importance of reflection, remembrance, and togetherness.

The morning began with a fascinating trip back in time, led by our very own Nick Davies. He curated a small but engaging exhibition of wartime memorabilia for residents to handle, filled with historical artefacts and personal items from the 1940s, including documents, trinkets and photographs. It was more than just a display, it was a chance to connect with the past and share stories. Many residents took the opportunity to reminisce about their own experiences and memories of the war years. Laughter and surprise filled the room, especially when some of the more unusual items, including replica firearms, were passed around—though we all agreed the firearms don't need to return to The Fleet again!

Later in the day, the mood lifted even further as our home was transformed into a street party-style celebration. Residents were treated to mini cream teas, Union Jack cupcakes, and slices of Catherine’s much-loved carrot cake. Pimms and a variety of other refreshments were served, with our team joining in to ensure everyone felt included and well looked after. The tables were dressed with bunting and flags, and the entire home buzzed with excitement.

Our musical entertainment came from the talented Juke Box Duo, whose set was a nostalgic journey through some of the best-loved songs from the 1940s and beyond. There was singing, clapping, dancing, and even a few tears as their music brought back powerful memories. Our team joined in with tambourines and more than a few questionable dance moves, adding to the fun and laughter of the afternoon.

We were also delighted to welcome children from a local nursery, who visited in the morning to enjoy the exhibition. It was heartwarming to see the interaction between our residents and the children, bridging the gap between generations and helping to share the importance of VE Day with the youngest members of our community.

Events like this are so important to us at The Fleet. They provide opportunities for reflection, reminiscence and real connection between our residents, staff and the wider community. We’re proud to create these moments where everyone can feel part of something meaningful.
